As the year draws to a close and we gather with loved ones to celebrate the season, we at Terravesta want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible progress we’ve made together in 2025. This year has been a landmark for Miscanthus a crop that continues to prove its potential as a sustainable, scalable solution for a green future.

Miscanthus across Europe: A year of growth and innovation

United Kingdom: Resilience in challenging conditions

Despite a difficult harvest season in the UK, marked by long maintenance periods and downtime at our industrial partners, we are proud to report that more tonnage was harvested this year than ever before. This achievement underscores the resilience of Miscanthus. It truly is a reliable and secure source of income for farmers and a dependable feedstock for industrial users, even in the face of dry spells and operational challenges. We also want to acknowledge the dedication of our haulier partners, who have worked tirelessly to manage pick-ups and deliveries amidst the plant downtimes, ensuring the supply chain remained as smooth as possible.

Germany: Scaling for impact, peat alternatives, and climatic resilience

Germany remains a leader in Miscanthus adoption, with significant strides in scaling production. Our collaborations with agricultural partners have shown how Miscanthus can be integrated into crop rotations, providing farmers with a reliable, low-input biomass source for bioenergy and biomaterials. The peat industry in Germany is actively searching for sustainable alternatives, and Miscanthus is emerging as a resource of great interest. Unlike wood or farming residues imported from distant regions like Southeast Asia (such as coir), Miscanthus offers a locally grown, sustainable solution that aligns with Germany’s environmental goals.

This year, Germany experienced a vastly warmer but less climatically stable season, which put our crops to the test. Our Terravesta AthenaTM variety demonstrated exceptional climatic resilience, delivering record yields compared to local varieties. This achievement highlights the robustness and adaptability of our hybrids, ensuring reliable performance even in challenging conditions.

Denmark: Pioneering sustainability and new opportunities

Denmark has embraced Miscanthus as a key player in its green transition. This year, we’ve seen expanded plantings and innovative partnerships with local farmers, demonstrating how Miscanthus can thrive in Nordic climates while supporting biodiversity and soil health. Tight nitrogen regulations in Denmark are opening up new opportunities for Miscanthus, particularly for fields near water bodies or coastal areas, where its low-input requirements and environmental benefits are especially valuable. Additionally, Denmark’s vast district heating networks, which rely on bales, present an incredible opportunity to scale Miscanthus production and utilization. We are also thrilled to share that we have been able to sign offtake agreements for alternative use cases. For example bedding suppliers in Denmark now have access to a new type of sustainable material.

The Netherlands: Innovation, high land values, and promising markets

The Netherlands is experiencing a rapid adoption of Miscanthus, driven by the government’s push to reduce soil contamination from intensive animal farming. Miscanthus offers a sustainable alternative that improves soil health and reduces environmental impact. Additionally, the Dutch government’s commitment to building homes from new sustainable materials has further accelerated the use of Miscanthus in construction, showcasing its versatility as a bio-based resource.
Land values in the Netherlands are amongst the highest in Europe, and this demonstrates that Miscanthus can be grown on high-value land with attractive margins. The local highly active renewable sector, combined with incredibly innovative biomass use cases, makes the Netherlands one of the most promising markets in Europe for Miscanthus.

MERIT project in Ukraine: A beacon of hope, soil restoration, and economic revival

We’re especially proud to highlight the MERIT project in Ukraine funded by the FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) and UK International Development, where Miscanthus is being cultivated to restore degraded lands and provide economic opportunities for local communities. Miscanthus will not only deliver feedstocks to industrial applications, but most importantly, it offers a solution to clean up contaminated soils and provide jobs for homecoming soldiers.

Farming in Ukraine is not just any other industry – it is a vital sector, comprising 10% of GDP, 15% of employment, and 40% of exports. By integrating Miscanthus into Ukraine’s agricultural landscape, we are supporting the revival of a sector that is fundamental to the country’s economy and recovery.

As we look forward to the New Year, we hope that the end of the war will come soon in a just way, allowing Ukraine to regain strength and become a prosperous democracy in the heart of Europe.

Looking ahead to 2026

As we celebrate this festive season, we’re filled with gratitude for your partnership and belief in our mission. Together, we’re not just growing a crop—we’re cultivating a sustainable future.

New biomass use cases keep pouring in from across the world, and we can clearly see that not just selected industries such as heat and power, but many others are looking at biomass coming from farms. This bodes well not just for Miscanthus, but for the wider farming sector as a whole.

In 2026, we’ll continue to innovate, expand, and advocate for Miscanthus as a cornerstone of Europe’s green economy.

Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful holiday season and a prosperous New Year. Here’s to another year of growth, collaboration, and positive impact!
