 Background and Overview of the role

Terravesta is the world’s leading specialist and the UKs largest supply chain for Miscanthus grass. Miscanthus is a dedicated energy crop which plays a huge role in offsetting the carbon output of the energy industry. Terravesta has an incredibly active Research and Development department, and through collaboration with some of the top universities, has developed several new, novel Miscanthus hybrids. Currently, there is only one commercially available strain of Miscanthus but Terravesta is now looking to expand the commercial selection with the newly developed varieties. The majority of the new hybrids are seed-based and initial growth is via plugs in a nursery environment; the plugs are then transplanted into the field using unique techniques developed by Terravesta and their partner institutions. The successful post holder would be responsible for overseeing the annual production of the new varieties in addition to aiding the expansion and development of the existing commercial crop.


The successful candidate will be based at the Terravesta offices in South Carlton, Lincolnshire. However, the post holder will be expected to travel nationwide and spend a portion of their time in other European locations.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Oversee the production of seed-based hybrids by working closely with nursery partners
  • Seek to improve nursery and seed performance working alongside R&D team
  • Constant monitoring of experiments, including data collection, processing and dissemination
  • Manage and implement production scale up and logistics
  • Manage supplier relationships
  • Assist in the development of existing rhizome-based varieties to improve propagation techniques and commercial upscaling
  • Ensure any collected data is efficiently managed
  • Assist with the annual planting activities both at an experimental and commercial scale
  • The appointee will be expected to manage their daily work schedule, monitoring progress and adapt their schedule as is necessary
  • Show involvement and assist the Research and Development department in activities relating to grant funded projects of which Terravesta are lead partners or have considerable involvement
  • Attend project meetings, both internal and external, to disseminate newly gathered information
  • Assist in the preparation and deliverance of reports and publications regarding to related research for project partners, academic institutions and the general public
  • Communicate efficiently with Research and Development department and other members of Terravesta in weekly meetings

Person Specification

Terravesta are willing to accept applications from candidates with a broad range of backgrounds, preferably with experience working in horticultural or agricultural production. Due to the nature of the business, working hours are not consistent and vary seasonally. There will be aspects of physically demanding work and the candidate will be expected to work in variety of locations and in all weathers. The post holder must be effective with communication and are willing to learn and work well in a team.

Essential qualifications:

There are few formal qualifications required, however the following are essential:

  • Full UK driving license
  • A levels or equivalent

Desirable qualifications:

  • Degree or other certificate of higher education relating to agriculture, horticulture or biological sciences
  • First aid
  • Trailer license
  • Agricultural qualifications (spraying qualifications or machinery qualifications)

Essential knowledge and experience:

  • Production management
  • Data processing and basic statistical analysis
  • Time and workload management
  • Effective communication within the work place and at public events
  • Computer literate
  • Reporting

Desirable knowledge and experience:

  • Agricultural and/or horticultural experience
  • Seed production or biology
  • Logistics management
  • Knowledge of field trials
  • Staff management
