Miscanthus products slash emissions, study finds

A new independent, peer-reviewed study has highlighted the significant role Miscanthus could play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions across a wide range of bio-based products.

Published in the journal GCB Bioenergy, the systematic review analysed 20 peer-reviewed studies covering 188 product comparisons and found that most Miscanthus-derived materials generated between 20% and 100% lower greenhouse gas emissions than the conventional products they replaced.

The greatest environmental benefits were seen where Miscanthus was used in long-life applications, such as construction materials, as well as horticultural products, plastics and other bio-based alternatives that displace fossil-derived materials.

The authors concluded there is strong evidence that expanding the use of Miscanthus in durable, high-value products could make a significant contribution to climate change mitigation while supporting the transition to a circular bioeconomy.

The findings reinforce the growing importance of Miscanthus as more than just an energy crop. As new markets continue to emerge for sustainable fibres, packaging, construction materials and horticultural products, the crop is increasingly recognised as a renewable feedstock capable of delivering both environmental and commercial benefits.

For growers, the research provides further independent evidence that demand for Miscanthus is likely to continue expanding as industries seek lower-carbon alternatives to traditional materials, creating new opportunities beyond the established biomass market.
