Climate study reinforces need for resilient farming systems

A major study published in Nature has reinforced concerns about the future of global food production, estimating that every 1°C rise in global temperatures could reduce food production by the equivalent of 120 calories per person per day, even after accounting for farmers adapting their practices. Researchers found that warming is likely to reduce yields across most major staple crops, with wheat among those expected to see significant declines.

While the study focuses on food production, its findings underline the wider need for farming systems that are resilient to a changing climate.

For crops such as Miscanthus, this presents an important opportunity. Rather than replacing food production, Miscanthus is typically grown on marginal or less productive land that is less suitable for arable crops. It provides farmers with an additional income stream while supplying renewable raw materials for sectors including energy, packaging and construction.

As a perennial crop, Miscanthus also offers wider environmental benefits, including carbon sequestration, improved soil health and low input requirements. Alongside productive food-growing land, crops that make use of more challenging areas can help build more resilient farm businesses and contribute to the transition towards a lower-carbon economy.
