Now that the application process for the Energy Crops Scheme (ECS) has come to a close, it’s time to take stock and look forward to the next phase of growth for the Miscanthus market. It’s an exciting time, as early figures show it’s likely that applications to plant in 2014 and 2015 will exceed 2,000ha.
Whilst these figures undoubtedly show that the ECS was a hugely important driver, it’s important not to lose sight of the other factors at play. Thanks to schemes like the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), the demand for domestic biomass is gathering momentum at greater velocity than ever before ??? not to mention the market created by commercial users and large-scale generators under increasing pressure to commit to clean power sources. Miscanthus in particular, as the UK’s homegrown energy crop ??? locally grown and locally burnt ??? is set to take centre stage as biomass becomes a more important part of the nation’s energy mix.
