Planting update

This weekend should mark the end of the miscanthus planting for 2017.

We’ve worked flat out to deliver a total of seven lorry loads to farms, which equates to 2,625,000, rhizomes. Planting these at a rate of 15,000 per hectare will establish miscanthus crops on 175 hectares of land.

Planting has been wide-spread and includes Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Wiltshire, across to the west midlands in Redditch to Worcestershire, and as far south as Essex and Ipswich. More than half of planting has taken place in the Midlands.

The rhizome quality is exceptional, they’re large, and healthy with plenty of buds and growers have commented how robust and vigorous they are.

We have a total of nine new growers planting this year and five existing miscanthus growers putting in more crops.

If you’ve planted, the next steps are to keep the seed bed as clean as possible for the next year with a pre-emergent herbicide and speak to your agronomist for a spray recommendation.
