And so to the Driffield Show, in the heart of biggest Miscanthus growing region, and our first public outing as Terravesta with a stand, pop-up displays and all.
As one of the few agricultural shows to have gone ahead of late, and with glorious weather as well, it was the perfect showcase for all aspects, from planting through to pellets and heat and power end use. It was an excellent opportunity for farmers of all kinds – existing growers, potential growers and sceptics – to find out about the latest crop and supply chain developments, and on the Terravesta stand we were happy to talk to them all.
There was a real sense that Miscanthus is moving forward, with “You’re not just a bunch of cranks anymore!” perhaps the greatest accolade we were able to take from the day.
With a strong presence from those who grow, process, and market, as well as the UK’s largest end-user in the shape of Drax Power, the commercial strength of this crop as both a long term enterprise and energy source was clearly demonstrated.
Most encouraging was the amount of interest shown from potential users, motivated by the strong sustainability and environmental credentials as well as a price that is competitive against fossil fuels. Goodbye crankdom, hello future.
