We were delighted to see so many new and familiar faces at our regional Miscanthus meetings earlier this month – thanks to all who came along. It was very beneficial to hear your questions and to have such an in-depth discussion about the future of the miracle energy crop Miscanthus. It’s great to hear that so many of us are concerned about quality and keen to talk about what we can all do to ensure the highest possible returns, whilst building confidence in the market amongst buyers and other stakeholders.
In fact, the importance of quality is the greatest lesson we’ve learned this year. For growers, Miscanthus is a lifetime investment, and one which will deliver significant returns with very little input. The premium for quality is the driver maximising return, and is largely a matter of planning and preparation, which are worth their weight in gold. Issues like early cutting, allowing time for senescence, baling dry, well thought-out stack siting and dry bale storage, all play a huge role in determining commercial success. They can make the difference between a profitable season and a wasted investment.
At Terravesta, we know Miscanthus has a bright future in the UK as an energy crop. We’ve seen a strong 2012 and are looking forward to even further market growth in 2013 – especially given the huge potential the crop has a biomass resource and the subsequent high demand from power generators. We’re keen to encourage long term relationships with our growers, who we see as very much at the heart of everything we do – and we’re looking forward to working together in the coming year.
If you weren’t able make it to our recent meetings, don’t worry – there will be plenty of opportunities to meet as we move into 2013. Keep an eye on the news page to stay up-to-date with all things Terravesta. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to get in touch to talk about any aspect of Miscanthus growth. We’d love to hear from you!
Merry Christmas and a happy new year, from all at Terravesta!
