How do biomass crops impact on your farm carbon footprint?

Whether due to pressure from others in the supply chain or personal motivation, many farmers are now using carbon calculators to better understand their farm’s emissions.

As part of the CHCx3 project, Farm Carbon Toolkit has worked together with AFBI, Crops for Energy and Calvium to investigate how switching to biomass crops impacts on a farm’s carbon footprint.

While farmers familiar with carbon calculators will undoubtedly want to do their own maths, Farm Carbon Toolkit has produced a few scenarios that really drive home the point that biomass crops are a great option for farmers interested in reducing their carbon footprint.

While it won’t come as any surprise that switching from ruminant livestock to biomass crops massively reduces emissions, the scenarios also illustrate just how much lower the emissions are likely to be from perennial biomass crops compared to arable.
